How NordPass Security Works

NordPass encrypts your vault with XChaCha20, and when you log in it derives your Master Key from your master password using the Argon2id algorithm with a 16-byte salt (NordPass's own security page, checked 30 September 2026). NordPass describes itself as currently the only major password manager using XChaCha20 — a vendor claim, but the cipher choice itself is not in doubt. Your vault is encrypted locally on your device before anything is sent to NordPass servers. The master password never leaves your device and is never stored by NordPass — if you forget it, NordPass cannot recover your vault. This zero-knowledge architecture means that even if NordPass servers were compromised, attackers would get only encrypted data that is useless without your master password.

On independent checks: the German security firm Cure53 audited the consumer NordPass product in 2020 and NordPass Business in 2021 — the Business audit found 15 security-relevant issues, one rated high severity, which NordPass fixed and Cure53 verified as fixed. NordPass also lists ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA among its certifications and runs a bug bounty programme.

Dashlane bundles a VPN and dark web monitoring into its base plan, which suits people who want one subscription rather than several — though a bundled VPN is typically lighter than a dedicated one.
